The Cap is Back! – Captain America: Winter Soldier Review

The last time the world had seen Captain America was the end of the Avengers and everyone went on their merry way. Captain America: The Winter Soldier focuses on the Cap assimilating into a modern world that is far different from the one Steve Rodgers (Chris Evans) once knew. S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) come back in full force for Captain America: The Winter Soldier as well as some new characters like The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Brock Rumlow (Frank Grillo), Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), Agent Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) and last but not least Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

Unlike other “Phase 2” movies such as Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World, Captain America doesn’t have his own situations to deal with. As a soldier of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Cap is working directly with Fury and the rest of the agents to save the world. In this action-packed political thriller, the Cap must deal with modern day politics and modern day threats. It has the perfect balance of dealing in the present while showing the history of S.H.I.E.L.D. and shedding light on some of the Captain’s own past as well. In terms of action and suspense Captain America: The Winter Soldier holds up against any action movie and packs more punch than its Phase 2 predecessors. Also like Captain America: the First Avenger because of Captain America’s direct relation with S.H.I.E.L.D. and events in the Marvel universe Captain America: The Winter Soldier has a much larger impact on what is to come. Now all eyes are on the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

OK! I did my part of warning you.

Captain America

S.H.I.E.L.D. is now disbanded. Fury is in Europe chasing down Hydra. Captain America and The Falcon are now on the hunt for the Winter Soldier. Agent Maria Hill applied to work at Stark Industries. This is what we are left with:

1stNew villains! Brock was taken on a stretcher all burnt up at the end and the best guess is there will be more of him and probably rocking a more fitting outfit for Crossbones. At the end of the film, he definitely is starting to look more like the comic character. Also Barot the Leaper was introduced. Georges “The Rush” St. Pierre did a great job and hopefully more of him to come in the future.

2nd – The Twins. A creative way to display Quicksilver and the Scarlett Witch was as the Twins. This is a risky move because while Fox has the rights to these characters this could create more overlap between characters. What if Fox or Sony were to make their own versions for characters? But ultimately these characters are needed for the Age of Ultron storyline.

3rd – Dr. Strange was mentioned as a target. While this may not mean much overall it is definitely one of those cool Easter eggs that Marvel does. Maybe Stephen Strange is a character that will be showing up sooner than later.

4th – Another infinity item. With all Marvel eyes on Thanos and two post-scenes, 3 of the 6 infinite items have been found. 1st – Tesseract is in Asgard. 2nd Aether is with the Collector. 3rd – the Chitauri Scepter we found out is with Hydra as with Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch. What is also interesting is that when Lady Sif and Volstagg said “it’s best not to have two infinite stones in one place” later the Collector said, “2 down and 4 to go.” Now it’s not clear if the Collector had 2 of them or if it’s because he knew that Asgard had the Tesseract and it’s the 2nd item. But it definitely set the mood for Guardians of the Galaxy and the hunt for the infinite items is definitely well underway.

5th – What happens to Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.!!!?!??!?! They were obviously signed for a second season so now what happens? Marvel has already had cross-overs with the movies and has shown it has an impact. So now what? This is going to be the biggest change in a T.V. show from a movie to date. Marvel can’t back out now that they’ve said the movies will affect the show. The future of the show is definitely going to be interesting.

6th – Where was Hawkeye and Coulson? Coulson, they will likely explain in Marvel AoS but what about Hawkeye? S.H.I.E.L.D. was crumbling and Fury’s right-hand man was nowhere in sight.

My only disappointment of this whole movie is more interaction. I know it must be extremely difficult to set things up without having Joss Whedon or Kevin Feige completely running the show. But hopefully, Marvel can master more interactions in the future. With the aftermath of Iron Man 3, it would have been great to see an absolutely exhausted Stark and Potts being told by Jarvis a satellite and 3 helicarriers were targeting them. Either way this a great film and definitely the best Phase 2 film so far.
